Why go with a masonry heater?
Among the vast range of heat source systems available today, wood burning is probably the most primitive. Modern alternatives are more advanced and often automatic. They may give us a sense of being independent of, and protected from, forces of nature. But what happens when we find ourselves without electricity? What happens if the system or its machines break down? Then yet again we turn to the most primal of heat sources – fire.
Sweden has a rich tradition of building tiled stoves, many of which are still in function today. The masonry stove is built with basic principles similar to the tiled stove, but is derived from eastern European countries, and their mass is greater. A masonry stove radiates heat during a longer period of time, and hence, it doesn’t get as hot on the surface. It also requires less frequent burning.
The shape of a masonry stove is very flexible since it is made with bricks, a building material with endless possibilities. It can basically have any shape and function desired. Perhaps a heated bench, or a pizza oven?
Rådig murspis
Rådig Murspis is run by me, masonry stove craftsman Tor Wågman. I follow the complete process from idea to the first fire, and afterwards as well if needed. I also do other fireplace-related work such as maintenance of tile stoves and chimneys.
